A Definition of Art

What is art?

Art is a label, pinned on a piece of creation or craftsmanship …

… either by a broad audience observing it.
… or by few marketers who want to sell it.

Very many/much

  • books are written,
  • paintings are drawn,
  • photograph are taken,
  • films are made,
  • songs are composed,
  • statues are built,
  • furniture is handmade,
  • architecture is built,
  • etc. …

All these creations require a set of skills, just like

  • building a business plan,
  • completing a thesis,
  • growing food,
  • programming an app,
  • constructing a skateboard.

None of these “creations” would normally be regarded as “art”, although the process that leads to the result is just as creational and based on skills and knowledge as the drawing of a storyboard or the direction of a theatre play.

Somebody who claims himself to be an artist, in fact is not. He is a craftsman who creates output.

It requires the feedback and appreciation of an audience to make him an artist – or a considerable marketing budget.

Just like “star”, “art” is an abstract that comes to live by popular consent.
